Merritt Island Swim Club

Parent Meeting

November 19, 2007

  • Welcome – Meeting called to order and members welcomed by Marie Dumoulin – President.  Other officers were introduced.

  • Coaches Talk

Major Hall spoke to the parents about team strengths, goals, commitment, coaching needs and meets.

Ø      Strengths of our team include: great kids, parents, families, assistant coaches Christy & Shelley.

Ø      Main goal of team is to develop swimmers to the best of their abilities.

Ø      Some benefits he hopes the kids realize are:

Lifelong healthy sport

Development of friendships

Development of lifelong skills

Self-discipline

Perseverance

See long term good as opposed to short term satisfaction

See process as opposed to just product

Ø      Suggested asking our kids to commit to a season at a time, at least 2-3 days per week. (less than 3 days a week is just maintenance – 3 or more days a week can bring improvement)

Ø      Goal setting is coming up again soon for swimmers.

Ø      We are looking for another assistant coach – needed for level 2B – if anyone knows someone with a heart for coaching, let them know we are looking.

Ø      B Champs meet is coming up – Major would like a great turnout for this meet – he acknowledges the difficulty of scheduling at this time of year but meets are what help keep the kids focused on why they are training.  Better attendance at meets is one way we could improve as a team.

  • Treasurer’s report – Julie Gonzalez – Treasurer, was unable to attend meeting, but did send in a year-to-date treasurer’s report which was distributed to members.   We are breaking even, which is a good thing since we are a non-profit organization.

Members discussed how to cover cost of extra coaching and anticipated YMCA fees this coming summer (last summer we had over 70 active swimmers).  Fund raising or charging a small once per year extra fee were the possibilities discussed.  Members all agreed they would prefer a one time fee.

  • FL Swimming Registrations -  registrations and dues are due by November 30th (see website for details – or get registration forms on pool deck)

  • Swim Banquet – will be held 1/5/08 at Faith Lutheran Church on Merritt Ave. (same location as last year).  Rachel Sterns has volunteered to be chairperson.  Team will provide main dish (Sonny’s BBQ) and drinks.  Families will each be asked to bring 2 side dishes.  Team records will be announced and each individual swimmer will be recognized and presented with a gift.  There will be a dessert auction – we will need at least 10 donated desserts that will be auctioned – proceeds will benefit the team.

We will pay for the gifts for the kids by selling navy blue towels with the team name monogrammed on them.  They will sell for $19 each or $18 each for two or more.  Lisa Liffrig will see if we can, for an additional fee, get swimmer’s names monogrammed also.  Lisa will send out an e-mail with details about the towels and request for orders.

Parents: please contact Rachel Sterns (RSterns1@cfl.rr.com) if you are willing to help with the Team Banquet.  We need help with set-up, decorating, baking, and clean-up.
